He arrived April 24, 1638, from Southampton, in the ship "Confidence", and joined the Barnstable church April 29, 1643, of which he was a consistent and highly respected member. !Children: Shurtleff 8:41-2 (Barnstable records): "Austine Beirse his daughter Mary borne 1640. Martha, 1642. Presilla, 10th of March, 1643.. Sarah the 28th of March, 1646. Abigaill the 18th of December, 1647. Hannah the 16th of Nouember, 1649. Joseph, the 25th of January, 1651. Hester, the 2cond of October, 1653. Lydia the latter end of September, 1655. Rebecka, September 26, 1657. His son James the latter end of July, 1660." Although the Utah Mag. of Genealogy article claimed he was a gypsy in continental Europe, it has alternatively been suggested that he was a son of Gauche Bearse and a Miss Matchowitch of Southhampton, Co. Hampshire, England.
