Notes
She was the fourth wife of Gov. Prence.
!Death: Mayf.Des.24:129-30: Mrs. Mary Prence: "His fourth wife, Mary (--)(Howes) Prence, survived him, & died Yarmouth Mass: "miss Mary Prince late wife of governor Thomas Prince died upon the Ninth day of desember: 1695 and was Buried upon the leventh daye of ye said: 1695"
Note: (my conjecture): She may have been a sister to Thomas Clarke. In [MD 9:206], Thomas Prence mentions his "brother Thomas Clarke" in his will, and requests T.C. to watch after his wife after his death.
Extensive articles in MD 6:157-165 and MD 6:230-5 show "incontestably" that she was Mrs. Mary (----) Howes, the widow of Thomas1 Howes of Yarmouth. The proof of this is to be found in the will of Captain Thomas-2 Howes and the will and inventory of his father Thomas-1 Howes. Thomas-1 gave his son Thomas-2 the homestead, then in Thomas-2's will he stated: "Be it alsoe Knowne that my will is that my Mother Prence Injoy without molestation During her Naturall life the house shee Now lives in", etc. This was actually his step-mother.
!Inventory: 23 Dec 1695 Yarmouth. Printed in MD 6:234-5.
!Death: Savage 2:478 is in error.
http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~church gives her maiden name as "Burr". I don't know the basis for this yet. Several others have repeated this.
Probably comes from Barnstable England.
