Notes

PARENTAGE ALERT: Harriet (Gilbert) Basford, wife of James Basford, is claimed to be the daughter of Josiah and Chloe Gilbert in many sources. WARNING -- THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT THIS IS WRONG, even though it has been repeated so many times. What we know for certain: * The baptism record of Harriet Elsey Basford, age 19, in the Methodist Church records of Dunham, Quebec, states that her parents are James Basford and Harriet Gilbert. * There is an adult baptism record for Harriet Gilbert on 1 Jan 1838 in the Methodist Church at Shefford, Quebec, giving her birthdate as 25 Nov 1806 and parents as Joseph Gilbert, Carpenter of Shefford, Lower Canada and Chloe his wife. Note: There is a record in Ancestrial file that claims the Harriet Gilbert b. 25 Nov 1806 married a Peter Redick, which is appears to be contradiction with the widespread claims that Harriet (Gilbert) Basford, wife of James Basford, was the daughter of Josiah and Chloe Gilbert. Here are some reasons to doubt the widespread claim. First, the 1838 adult baptism occurred 14 years after Harriet (Gilbert) Basford gave birth to Harriet Elsey (Basford) West. She would have been married for at least 14 years and been going by the name Harriet Basford. So why did the baptism record name her as Harriet Gilbert? Second, Harriet b. 1806 would have been 15 years old when Harriet (Gilbert) Basford gave birth to her daughter Harriet Elsey Basford. While not impossible, that is highly suspicious. AT THIS POINT, I have removed Josiah Gilbert and Chloe Barnard as her parents. Harriet Gilbert b. 1806 is in my db as RIN=43481, along with her parents. This allows that these are likely to different Harriet Gilbert, until prove emerges to show otherwise.
