Notes
Of the Mayflower.
Biography from the Random House Encyclopedia, 1977: American settler. b. England. A signer of the Mayflower Compact and organizer of Plymouth Colony, he settled in Duxbury, Mass. in 1627. Traditionally, he is known as the first Pilgrim to set foot on Plymouth Rock, and as the man who won the hand of Priscilla Mullens after first wooing her for his friend, Miles Standish, an event dramatized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "The Courtship of Miles Standish." He wed Priscilla in 1625 and they had 11 children. He served as the governor's assistant (1623-41, 1650-86), twice serving as deputy governor.
See also The Mayflower Descendant 9:129,193.
He was hired at Southampton by the Pilgrims to be a Cooper (he wasn't a political refugee as were the other pilgrims).
Note: Zachariah Alden and Henry Alden have both been incorrectly identified as sons of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. They were not.
Articles entitled "John Alden Theories on English Ancestry" are in Mayf.Des. 39:111-122, 40:133-136, by Alica Crane Williams.
Theories of parentage:
1. Son of George and Jane Alden, grandson of Richard and Avys Alden of Southampton, England. William Bradford wrote that John Alden was hired at Southampton, so this is the natural place to look, but no supporting evidence for this theory has been found. The theory was put forth in "The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers", 1929, by Charles Edward Banks. The names George, Richard and Avys do not show up in John Alden's family, casting further doubt on this theory.
2. Son of John Alden and Elizabeth Daye of Harwich, Essex Co., England, grandson of John Alden and Elizabeth Russell, and great grandson of William and Elizabeth Russell. A son of William & Elizabeth Russell married Sybil Jones, who was the mother of Christopher Jones, the captain of the Mayflower. This family was also a sea-faring family. This makes this one of the more popular theories.
