Notes
King of England, 1154-1189.
He inherited the Angevin lands, obtained Aquitaine by marrying Eleanor (1152), and succeeded to the throne (1154). He reformed the judicial, monetary, and military systems, but his attempt to bring church courts under secular control through the Constitutions of Carendon (1164) failed. By the Treaty of Montmirail (1169), Henry secured France's sanction for his sons' succession to his territories and Prince Henry was crowned heir (1170). After the murder of Thomas a Becket (1170), Henry's life was beset by trouble with the Roman Catholic Church, revolts in Ireland and Normandy, and strife with his own sons.
