Notes
Isabella of Angouleme was his second wife.
King of England 1199-1216.
Youngest son of Henry II, he had himself declared heir (1191) in Richard I's absence. His probable murder of his nephew Arthur (1203), territorial losses in France (1204-5), and aggressive acts against the church made him extremely unpopular. Excommunicated in 1212, he was forced to submit and enlist the pope's support against his enemies (1213). At Runnymede (1215) he was compelled to accede to his barons' demands in the Magna Carta. Thereupon John attacked his opponents. Civil war ensued, during which John died, possibly poisoned.
