That James Larkins is the father of William E. Larkins is established by the Bounty Land Claim filed in Clackamas Co., Oregon on 19 Oct 1861, where this is stated.
Possible son: Thomas C. Larkins m. 25 Sep 1821 Sarah Bartlett, by Isaac Carter J.F. [Muskingham Co. Ohio Marriage Index, 1806-1835], LDS Film #0865142.
Elaine Rulmer <elaine46@earthlink.net> sent me an email on Jan 3, 1998, in which she identifies her ancestor, James Larkins b. 1749 Frederick Co., Maryland, m. 1793 Lancaster PA to Cathiline Keiger Gerlinger, and d. 1828 in Harrison Co., Ohio. She says that when this James applied for his pension, three people signed affadavits as knowing him, his age, and being in war with him, and all three came from Sommerset Co., Pennsylvania. Based on this, she believes that her James Larkins is the James Larkins of Turkeyfoot Twp. -- and thus the father of William E. Larkins. This theory, however, does have a few problems. First is William E. Larkins was b. in Tennessee, but her James Larkins was not known to have lived in Tennessee. Also, her James would have been 45 years old when William E. was born, which is a little on the older side. Currently there is nothing substantial to either confirm or refute this theory, so it does remain a good lead.
More details from Elaine: Her James Larkins had: 1. James b. 1784, 2. John b. 1794, 3. Seth b. 1794, 4. Thomas Calvin b. 1799 (her ancestor), 5. Elizabeth/Betsy b. 1806 (and she believes perhaps William E.). Her James said he was 62 in 1820 while applying for a pension (ie b.1758) & his wife was 60. At that time, he had three children at home, a son 21 (b.1799), son 18 (b.1802), and daughter 14 (b.1806). He applied for the pension while living in Cadiz, Harrison Co., OH, and explained his life & times in OH. Signers of his affadavits were Felix Duffel, Thomas Little, and Capt. William Paul, all living in Sommerset Co. Elaine has not yet found his will, but has found a reference saying that the son Seth was the executor.
Full copy of pension papers in possession of Lonnie Chrisman (and fully transcribed by Lonnie Chrisman). Note: As of Jan 5, 1856, it is testified that the only living children of James Larkins, dec'd, are Betsey Cook of Wyandot Co., Ohio, and James Larkins of Green Co., Ohio.
Rosalee Pleis faxed me a copy of a handwritten bounty land claim, transcribed as follows:
War Department; Section of M. Bty Lands & Pensions February 17th, 1813
By the Records in this Office it appears that a Warrant to satisfy the claim of James Larkins (who was a Soldier in the Pennsylvania Line of the late Revolutionary Army of the United States) was issued to Michael Steven Afs. under the number 9837 dated March 10th 1795.
P. Nat Cutting
The Warrant is in favor of Michael Michael Stever Afs of James Larkins, the later wants to know by what authority the former attained the Warrant -- that information tis ?preserved ?may be ?hav at the War Department.
!Bounty Land Warrant Record Card. Faxed of original to me Nov 1998. Transcribed as follows:
The National Archives, form VAN-51 12-3-41; BOUNTY LAND WARRANT RECORD CARD*; Division of Veterans' Administration Archives.
Name: Larkins, James Grade: Private Line: Pennsylvania Warrant Number: 9837 Acreage: 100 Issued: March 10, 1795 to Michael Stever, assignee.
* The information concerning the issuance of warrants carded on this form is found in volumes 2 to 4 of "Land Warrants Issued Prior to 1800" which are registers of bounty land warrants issued to non-commissioned officers and privates under congressional resolutions of September 16, 1776, and subsequent dates. Other records relative to the applications for warrants appear to have been destroyed in the War Department fire of November 6, 1800. Information concerning warrants surrendered to the Federal Government is to be found in General Land Office records in the National Archives.
The intestate estate settlement of James Larkins, 1828 is in Harrison Co., OH case #280 (it is not in Hamilton Co.). From [Index to Ohio Wills & estates]
Note that James Larkins is NOT found on the PA census of 1790. This is suggestive that he might not have been in Lancaster at the time -- could he have been in Tennessee for a short while around that time period?
