!Census (1790): Orrington Maine (then Hancock Co.). "Samuel Bartlett", 2 males in household 16 years or older, 1 male under 16, and 3 females. [Note: identities would be: over 16=himself and 1 unidentified, male under 16=Samuel Jr., Females = wife Joanna, dau. Joanna, and one unidentified, possibly his sister Mary(?). It appears that the census was enumerated before 11 Mar 1790. Adjacent to him in census enumeration was Edward Snow.]

!Census (1800): [NEHGR 105:278] 5 males, 4 females. Only one listed there in Orrington from Plymouth.

Capt. Samuel Bartlett, from Plymouth Mass., was the first Merchant in what is now Orrington, Maine, in 1789. His store and wharf were at Bartlett's Cove and Point, above Bald Hill. His business was largely wholesale, as he imported many goods directly from Europe and the West Indies. He built the first vessel in the town, owned the first wheeled carriage, and ran packets to Boston. He was also a shipmaster, and built the first vessel built in Orrington. He was one of the most enterprising men of his time. He and his ship Sally were detained in France during one of the French Revolutions, nearly three years, from 1794 to 1797 (or 1793 to 1795, depending on the source). He also had an interest in several other vessels along with General John Crosby of Hampden.

They also had a child who died on 13 Feb 1771 in Plymouth. I don't know if that is the same as any of the other children listed. In addition, there was a daughter that was born and died in July, probably in 1755 or 1756. And a child Died Sepr 12 1781 that appears to be his [Ply.Ch.Recs 23:411]

His baptism is probably on Apr 16 1732: "The Children of Samuel Bartlet viz Samuel &c" [Ply.Ch.Recs.1:4:17, in Pub.Col.Soc.Mass 22:243]

!Possible-Children-Baptism: The following record is probably the baptism of his children (and his own adult baptism): "1732 Apl 16 The Children of Samuel bartlet viz Samuel &c" [Plymouth Church Records 1:4:17 in Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Vol. 22, pg. 243]

In Apr 1714, he inherited land (a portion of the farm) from his father in Plymouth. On 25 May 1721, Samuel sold his right to this land, except for one acre of fresh meadow. [Plymouth Co. land recs, 17:80, MF 16:263].

On 15 Jan 1730/1, Samuel Bartlett and wife Hannah sold 1/4 of a lot in Great Cedar Swamp that had belonged to her father, John Churchill [Plymouth Co. land recs 16:160, MF 16:263].

On 17 Mar 1745 Samuel's nephew Benjamin Morton (son of Lydia (Bartlett) Morton) chose him as guardian. [Plymouth Co. probate recs #14, 239, 10:82; TAG 37:146; MF 16:263].

Samuel served as an officer at Louisburg.

Administration of his estate (the estate of Samuel Bartlett, gentleman) was granted to his son Samuel Bartlett of Plymouth, fisherman, on 24 Apr 1751. The son Samuel Bartlett gave bond, with Thomas Foster Esq., and Job Morton, cooper, all of Plymouth, on the same date. Inventory taken on 2 May 1751 by Thomas Foster, Samuel Denham, and Joseph Bartlett, and included the homestead and buildings, one sixth of a saw mill in Plymouth, a 17-acre wood lot, and a 10-acre wood lot. Samuel Bartlett

On 12 Feb 1683, Benjamin Bartlett Sr. of Duxbury gave son Samuel 3 lots in Little Compton [MF:Warren:11]

In 1694 and 1704, Samuel Bartlett was chosen grand juryman for Duxbury [Duxbury town recs 184, 201, MF 16:75].

In March 1711/12, Samuel Bartlett served on a committee appointed to lay out a way "through the Woods from Plymouth to Weymouth nearer and more convenient than now it is". {Plymouth Co. Ct Recs 1:282, MF 16:75].

He died intestate. Letters of administration were granted on 9 Dec 1713 to his widow Hannah Bartlett. She gave bond along with William Brewster. His inventory was taken 15 Jan 1713/4 and included "that part of said Farm which did formerly belong to William Paybodie", a portion purchased from Rev. Mr. John Robinson, meadow at the Salt house beach, 40 acres in the first division of the commons in Duxbury and Pembroke, and a whole right in the second and last division of the commons. His real estate was divided on 1 Mar 1713/4, signed 19 Apr 1714, and divied out on 20 April 1714, to eldest son Benjamin [a double portion], Joseph the second son, Samuel the third son, and Ichabod the fourth son, with money to daughters Hannah, Elizabeth, Lydia and Sarah. The sons received teh farm and had to pay money for the account of their four sisters. [Plymouth Co. PR #1, 368, 3:255, 293-96]. Hannah was appointed guardian of four of the children on 19 Apr 1714: Ichabod, Elizabeth, and Lidia, all under 21, and Sarah under 14 [Plymouth Co. PR #1262, 3:298-300]. [MF 16:75].

Claims made at various points that he had sons Judah and William were disproved in TAG 37:141-50.

!Death: The exact date of his death is not known, but it is certainly between the date of his will (dated 11 Oct 1650) and the date his will was probated (10 Feb 1651). Given the way pilgrims did things, his death almost certainly occurred a few days before 10 Feb 1651, or at the earliest, in late january.

Robert Bartlett

(Beware: Another Robert Bartlett immigrated in the ship Lyon in 1632. That one married an Anna (---) and settled in Cambridge, Mass.)

From 1633, juryman and town officer.
He died in 1676 and bequeathed his entire estate to his wife.
He was in on the first purchase of Dartmouth.

The earliest reference showing his marriage to Mary Warren was in a Court Order dated 7/17 Mar 1636/7, reading as follows: "It is agreed upon by the consent of the whole Court that Elizabeth Warren Widdow the relict of mr. Richard Warren Deceased ...her sonnes in law Richard Church Robert Bartlett and Thomas Little in marriage wth their wives her daughters" [Court Orders, I:107, MD 3:48].

The marriage did not occur until after 1 Jun 1627 (Gregorian=new style). Since his oldest son, Benjamin, was admitted a freeman on 16 June 1654, he was thus born before 16 June 1633. Assuming his daughter Rebecca was 16 years old when married on 30 Dec 1649, she would have been born before 1633. Thus, it is likely that they were married as early as 1629. [MD 3:106]
