  • John Faunce (29 NOV 1654-)
    Notes:
Came to Plymouth in the Ann in 1623.
Probably from Purleigh, Essex County, England.

In 1623 he was given 2 acres of land "beyond the brooke to Strawberie-hill" in Plymouth, shown as "Manasseh [] John Fance". [Shurtleff 12:5]

Source: "The Faunce Family" by James Freer Faunce, in NEHGR 114:115-125 (1960).

He died either 29 Nov 1653 or 29 Nov 1654. C.H. Pope in "Pioneers of Massachusetts" says John died 29 Nov 1653; and inventory was taken 15 Dec 1653 (Plymouth Records, NEHGR 5:259). Savage in his "Genealogical Dictionary" says it was the son John who died 29 Nov 1654. Goodwin in his "The Pilgrim Republic" p. 243 says John died when his son Thomas was eight years old, which would be in late 1653, and since his last child Joseph was born 14 May 1653, this is the date accepted by James Freer Faunce. Shurtleff 8:16 transcribes Plymouth records as "29th of Nouember" in the 1654 register.

The inventory of his estate was taken 15 Dec 1653 and subsequently exhibited 7 March 1654 on the oath of the Widow Patience Faunce, widow of John Faunce, deceased.

"His grave is unknown and his son, Elder Thomas Faunce, told Dea. Ephraim Spooner that the graves of his parents were leveled and sown over in order to conceal them from the Indians." [NEHGR 114:117]

    Notes:
In Plymouth on 16 Oct 1632 when "Mr. John Holmes" purchased a house and six acres of land adj oining Reed Pond from William Palmer for 35 pounds sterling to be paid within one year. [Nat.Gen.Soc.Quar.Vol. 74 (1986), p. 83, and Records of the Colony of New Plymouth in New England, ed. Nathaniel Shurtleff and Davlid Pulsifer, 12 Vols. (Boston, 1855-6, reprinted NY 1968), Deeds, p. 12:18.] In [Shurtleff 12:19], the following excerpt is recorded: "Wheras William Spooner of Colchester in the County of Essex by his Indenture beareinge date the twenty seaventy day of March Anno Dni 1637 in the thirteenth year of his Maties Raigne [] hat put himself apprentice wth John Holmes of New Plymouth in America gent from the first day of May next after the date of the said Indenture unto the end [] terme of six yeares thence..." It is known that he was not in Plymouth in 1627 [Genealogical Journal 13 (1984-5): 135-199], and also from the list of division of cattle on 22 May 1627 in [Shurtleff 12:9-13], where his name does not appear. His precise immigration is not known. He was probably not a separatist Pilgrim.

His parentage is not proven. MacKenzie identifies him as the son of Thomas Holmes of Colchester, co. Essex, England who died in 1637, but without supporting documentation. Stratton [NGSQ 74:83] says this would probably be Thomas Holmes, maltster, of Colchester, who dated his will 7 Nov 1637 and named his daughter Susan Morton; his grandson Thomas Holmes, the son of his son John; and his daughter Frances. [Will recorded in the Archdeaconry of Colchester, 225CW12, 1637]. On March 27, 1637, William Spooner of Colchester, co. Essex, England indentured himself as an apprentice to John Holmes, gentleman, of New Plymouth, for a term of six years. [Plymouth Colony Records, Deeds, 1:19] Thus, he does appear to have connections to Colchester, making this a highly likely but still inadequately proven theory of his parentage.

Various records indicate that Mr. Holmes was considerably above average status in comparison to the population of Plymouth. In the 25 March 1633 tax ratings, he ranked 23 out of 67 households [NGSQ 74:84, PCR 1:10]. But he does not carry a title of high respect as others of the colony did, which could have been due to his mis-behavior, since he appears before the court on various charges, especially drunkenness [NGSQ 74:84].

On 4 Dec 1638, he was sworn as Messenger for the whole Government, or Messenger of the Court, a position he took over from Joshua Pratt [PCR 1:54, 105; NGSQ 74:83-110, esp. 84]. William Bradford's memoirs describe how a young man, Thomas Granger, a servant of Love Brewster in Duxbury with wife and children, was executed for the crime of bestiality around 8 Sept 1641. John Holmes as Messager served as his executioner.

The last record that has been proven to be in reference to him was on 7 Oct 1651. He did not appear on the list of freemen believed to have been made circa 1658. There are some appearances of John Holmes after that date, but these are probably refering to his son. There is also a John Holmes of Duxbury which was a different person altogether. There is a record of a Plymouth town meeting of 15 March 1702/3, in which was stated: "The Reed Pond granted to John Holmes of Plimouth deceased on the 13 of October 1667 was bounded," etc. [Charles Henry Pope, "The Pioneers of Massachusetts", Boston 1900, p. 237; Plymouth Town Recs., 1:310]. [NGSQ 74:86] points out that this quotation is ambiguous in that the date could be refering to the date of decease, or to the date of the grant, and that based on the minutes of another town meeting on 13 Oct 1667 we can learn that truth of fact, it was indeed refering to the granting: "a privilidge of grasse or sedge is graunted unto John Holmes at the Reed pond in case hee can make medow of the whole pond or any pte therof it is to be his owne" [Plymouth Town Records 1:91]. This would show the referent in those town minutes to be his son John who died in 1697.

There is no direct reference in the records of his wife. It is unknown if he married in Plymouth, or immigrated with a wife already. [NGSQ 74:86] suggests that the record of a "Mrs. Sarah Holmes died at Plymouth 18 August 1650" [Mayf.Des. 16:235] was probably his wife. [Davis, "Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth", 2:14] lists his children as John, Josiah, Nathaniel, and Sarah, but NGSQ 74:86,104 claims that Davis' claim of a son Josiah was almost certainly incorrect and a confusion with Josiah son of William Holmes of Scituate and Marshfield, and furthermore knows of no records of Sarah, although this possibility of a daughter named Sarah remains highly plausible. [MacKenzie, "Colonial Families of the US", p.6], lists children Nathaniel, Thomas, and John. NGSQ says we can only credit John with children Nathaniel and John, but of course if John is the son of Thomas of Colchester, then we also have proof of a son Thomas. Proof of son John is solid [NGSQ 74:86-7]. Proof of Nathaniel is less conclusive based primarily on him being at the right place at the right time. A daughter Sarah is highly plausible

The source for most of the above information, which also contains additional records of his during his lifetime in Plymouth, is: 1. "Descendants of Mr. John Holmes, Messenger of the Plymouth Court", by Eugene
    A. Stratton, C.G., F.A.S.G., in The National Genealogical Society Quarterly,
    Vol. 74, June 1986, No. 2, pgs. 83-110].

    Notes:
George Morton was a member of the Leyden congregation under Robinson, probably because it wa s the available English church at that place. Like many of the other members he was a merchant or small trader from York, England.

Before that, he was said to be a merchant of Harworth, Notts., and to have come from Austerfield, Yorks.

He came to Plymouth in the Little James in 1623 along with Mrs. Juliana (Carpenter) Morton. He was a merchant of Harworth, Notts County, England.
A Thomas Morton Jr. came over in the Ann the same year, and his father, Thomas Morton, came over in the Fortune in 1621.

He was granted 8 acres jointly with Experience Mitchell "against the swampe & reed-ponde" in Plymouth in 1623. [Shurtleff 12:6]

The following is from "New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial" by William Richard Cutter, Vol. 3, page 1586-7:

George Morton is presumed to be the editor of the valuable book usually called "Mort's Relation." (See Dr. Young, Chronicals of Pilgrims, p. 113, and Dr. Felt's Annals of Salem, and Cutter's New England Families). This book is made of contributions from Robert Cushman, John Robinson, William Bradford, and Edward Winslow, covering much the same ground as by Governor Bradford's work. It was published by John Bellamie in London in 1622. George Morton wrote the introduction only, and signed his name G. Mourt. His son Nathaniel, in his "New England Memorial" (Cambridge, Mass., 1669, page 48), says of his father:

"Mr. George Morton was a pious, gracious servant of God and very faithful in whatsoever public employment he was betrusted withal, and an unfeigned well-willer and according to his spehere and condition a suitable promoter of common good and growth of the plantation of New Plimouth, laboring to still the discontents that sometimes would arise among some spirits, by occasion of the difficulties of these new beginnings; but it pleased God to put a period to his days soon after arrival in New England, not surviving a full year after his coming ashore. With much comfort and peace he fell asleep in the Lord in the month of June, Anno 1624."

The "New England Memorial" contains some of the matter published in "Mourt's Relation." Mr. Morton appears to have been an agent of the Leyden colony in London at the time the book was published. As to his ancestry there is reason to believe that he was the George Morton of the family of Anthony Morton of Bawtry.

    !Marriage: Mayf.Des.11:193 (Marriage Certificate).

!Birth-Baptism-Marriage-Death-Bio: "New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial" by William Richard Cutter; Lewis Historical Publishing Co.; New York; 1914, pages 1586-7.

His birthdate is given in NEHGR 114:117 as 1585. There it says he was a merchant of a well-to-do Roman Catholic family of Harworth, near Scrooby, England who organized the Ann and Little James company and died impoverished not long after landing.

========================================================================= The following is from Dictionary of American Biography VII:254:

MORTON, GEORGE (1585-June 1624). Pilgrim father, was probably the son and heir of Anthony Morton, a wealthy Catholic gentleman living near Bawtry or Harworth, not far from the little village of Scrooby, in Nottinghamshire, England. When still very young, he was converted by William Brewster to Puritanism. He was a member of the Scrooby congregation before their emigration and either went to Holland with them or followed them after a residence at York. He is one of the three emigrants to America who can be traced to the Scrooby district, the others being Brewster and William Bradford. On July 23, 1612, he was married at Leyden to Juliana Carpenter. Morton was possessed of considerable means, was entered in his marriage record [MD 11:193] as a merchant from York, was apparently one of the financial mainstays of the Pilgrims at Leyden, and was certainly closely associated with the leaders. He was one of those who went to London in 1619 to negotiate with the merchants, living probably at Aldgate, where his brother-in-law, Edward Southworth, was already established. Here he changed his name to Mourt, perhaps to escape the displeasure of his Catholic relatives.

While Robert Cushman was absent in America, Morton was probably chief Pilgrim agent in London. He received the writings sent in the Fortune from Plymouth in 1622, and published them under the title: "A Relation or Journall of the beginning and proceedings of the English Plantation setled at Plimoth in New England...London, Printed for John Bellamie" (1622), which is still the only contemporary account of the voyage of the Mayflower and the first months of the colony. Tradition has assigned to him the authorship, and it has always been known as "Mourt's Relation". It has been conjectured that Bradford and Winslow were the authors and Morton merely the publisher, but since the narrative Bradford wrote and sent back on the Fortune was retained by the captain of teh French privateer which captured the Fortune on its return voyage (Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series, 1574-1660, 1860, p. 124), it is possible that Morton wrote a narrative from information brought back by those returning on the Mayflower and teh Fortune and published it together with material by Winslow and others not retained by the French captain. The authorship of the book cannot now be definitively established.

Morton was one of the organizers of the voyage of the Anne and the Little James in 1623 and came himself with his wife and four children, and his wife's sister, Alice Southworth, a widow, who married Governor Bradford the following year. He was assigned an excellent piece of land in 1624, but died in June of that year. His property having by this time been spent in the Pilgrim service, Bradford assumed care of his wife and children. Morton's descendants have been numerous and influential. His eldest son, Nathaniel, was secretary of the colony for many years.
