Notes:
Of Kingston and Guilford. One of the proprietors of the New Paltz patent.
He removed June 1733 to Kingston N.Y. and lived in the house at East Front Street at the head of Main Street now known as Schryver Hotel.
In 1757 he was Colonel of the Ulster County Militia and a letter from him to Lt. Gov. Delaney detailing an Indian attack upon the town of Rochester is in the Documented History. He was a member of the Colonial Assembly from 1739 to 1745; 1748 to 1750 and again from 1759 to 1768.
Col. Hasbrouck occupied a prominent position in the political history of his time and took active part in the movement of the patriots of the Revolution. In October 1775 he was appointed by the Provincial Congress Lt. Colonal of the regular militia commanded by Col. Jonathan Snyder. Considerable difference in regard to rank arose among officers of the several regiments evidently increased by the appointment of George Clinton as Brig. Gen. of the District. The officers of the Northern Regiment remonstrated with the Provincial Congress and the correspondence has been printed with the journal of that body (Vol.. 1, pg. 153).
In consequence of the difference Col Hasbrouck declined to serve and after twenty years continuance in his position retired from military life. He was Deputy to the 3rd Provincial Congress who met at White Plains and after the Revolution represented the country in the Assembly of 1781-82 but on account of his advanced years declined a re-election in that body.
Col. Hasbrouck was a gentleman of considerable antiquarian taste and his collection relative to the early history of the country was quite valuable but unfortunately they were lost at the burning of his house in 1776. The only article of this sort preserved was the family record. After a life usefulness and credit he died Nov 11, 1791 and was buried with honors at Kingston NY.
Ref: Page 59 apend: "Account of the British Expedition".
Col. Hasbrouck carried on the mercantile business in Kingston for thirty-one years. In 1776 his store was destroyed by fire. He then moved and in his later years had his residence in the large stone building well remembered by people of the present generation as Schryder's Hotel on East Front Street which was destroyed by fire in 1876. He was usually called "Colonel" but was not engaged in active services in the Revolution being an old man when the war commenced. During a long term of years he kept a diary which contained more authentic information probably than any other record of that time in the country. The diary is quite a large volume and now is in the possession of the family of his great grandaughter Mrs. George H. Sharpe. (Early 1960's).
Col. Hasbrouck, although residing in Kingston continued to take a great interest in the affairs of New Paltz and the feud between the Hasbroucks and the Eltinges which formed so important a part of the history of those times and in which he bore quite a conspicuous part.
The origin of the feud was as nearly as we can ascertain, the attempt on the part of Noah Eltinge and Nathaniel LeFevre to obtain from the Colonial government a patent for 3,000 acres of land lying on the South side of Paltz patent. This was strongly opposed by Col. Abraham Hasbrouck and others in behalf of the balance of the Paltz people alleging that the original Paltz patent covered a part of this tract. To make the fight more bitter an action was commenced against Noah who resided where the late Edmund Eltinged lived and it was claimed that the land which he occupied and which his father purchased of Solomon and Louis DuBois, Jr. in 1796 was also a part of teh Paltz patent and that therefore his title to it was not valid. Finally the matter was settled without coming into court. In 1775 Col. Abraham Hasbrouck together with Louis Bevier of Marbletown and Jacob Hasbrouck obtained a grant of 2,000 acres of land south of the New Paltz patent and in the neighborhood of the present Clintondale depot.
Public life summary: Commissioned lieutenant colonel of 1st Regiment, Ulster Co. militia, 1775. Delegate of 3rd Provincial Congress, 1776, member of State Assembly, 1781. Member on the committee in charge of public record.

Notes:
Abraham Hasbrouck went from Manheim to Holland and in 1675 sailed for America.
Before coming to New Paltz, N.Y., and when residing at Hurley, New York, Abraham Hasbrouck was appointed Justice.
Tradition states that Abraham Hasbrouck served in the English Army with Gov. Andros and that it was his influence with the Colonial Governor that the Huguenots obtained the grant of so large and fine a tract of land at New Paltz, New York.
The diary of Abraham Hasbrouck, the grandson of the current entry, states that his grandfather went to Rotterdam and thence to Amsterdam where he embarked for England in 1673. From England he sailed to Boston thence proceeded to Esopus, New York, where he found his brother Jean who had come to America previously on the ship "Golden Otter".
It is very probable that Abraham may have served in the English Army and then gone back to his home in Manheim before he left that place for the New World. Abraham reached Esopus, New York, July 1675 and the next year he married at Hurley or Kingston, New York, Maria Deyou. Maria was a young woman with whom Abraham had
been acquainted in the Palantine and was one of the passengers with him across the ocean to America.

Notes:
A Merchant in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He moved to Mobile Alabama with his father and sister sometime after 1860, and returned to New York City about 1865. He lived for a short time with his mother's sister, Mrs. Abigail (Case) Resler of New York City.
He received $500 from his uncle's will, June 1904.
A letter dated 2/1/52 from Ida May Briggs to Lillian (Briggs) Gosman stated that she found David R. Briggs to have been born in Bloomingdale, NY.
It also states that the minister that married David R. Briggs and Cornelia Bowrosan was "Wm. H. Honson, on May 19, 1872". The letter is not sure of the church, and proposes this as a clue to locate the exact church.

Notes:
!Birth: Notes of Lilliam (Briggs) Gosman, reading: "NY Gazette: Aug 3, 1815 Eliza Jones b."
, "NY Evening Post, Aug 3, 1815", and "Bkly L. J. Star: Aug 3, 1815 Eliza Jones b." This seems to give three newspaper sources for her birth, although the notes do not give the issue or mention parentage.
!Death: From bible that was in possession of Lillian M. Briggs Gosman in 1954, and transcribed by Lillian, transcription reading: "Eliza Bowrosan died July 16th 1895" with Lillian's handwriting next to it: "mother of Cornelia E. Briggs".

Research notes:
Notes of Lilliam M. (Briggs) Gosman contain the following with a check by it:
Ward 17 NYC, 1860, John & Mary Jones b. Eng abt 1790
Ward 17 NYC, 1850 [?furish furs?] pg 122 on Vol 55
Roll 897 NYC 1880 Wd 19 house #37-209 + [?furnish?]
Roll 894 NYC 1880 Wd 19 house #132-360, 138-366 [?furnish?]
I haven't been able to find her in 1880 census yet, but I did find an Eliza Barowsen, mother age 52 b. PA, in household of William and Addie Hutchins. Interesting, this seems to be the household of Adeline (Briggs) Hutchins, the dau. of David R. Briggs. This entry gives father's birthplace as Eng, mother's as PA. Is there a connection? The dates are off...
