!Death: Oregon Death Index: "Elizabeth A. Haines" Spouse=John, Place=Marion Co. The birthdate in the index appears to be a typo, says 1892. Viola confirmed that she died in 1961 or 1962 (confirmed in Nov 1994 over phone. Said she was 92 when she died, and 35 when Viola was born -- consistent with all known facts).

!Immigration: Ellis Island, NY passenger records: NAME: Cutych, Fransisek, Ethnicity: Austria Bohemian, Place of Residence: Kostomlaty, Austria, Date of Arrival: 14 Mar 1910, Age on Arrival: 50y, Gender: M, Marital Status: M, Ship of Travel: Amerika, Port of Departure: Cuxhaven, Hamburg, Germany.
October 1918, Cutych rented SVOBODA place of 280 Acres with 52 goats at $175 a year. Rented it for 4 years.
He weighed about 140 lbs at death and had brown hazel eyes.
STORIES TOLD TO STANLY WALTER BY GRANDPA CUTYCH:
He worked on a large estate, cared for deer, grouse and wild pigs. Gypsys asked to clean out his long stemmed pipe and chewed the settlement from the bottom. The Gypsies asked if 'BUH'-GOD disposed of any animals. If they knew where the animals were buried, they would dig them up and eat them. Poachers were fed to wild pigs. (Interview recorded by Vera Walter Thomas).
"Grandpa Sikner" in CSSR told me that Grandpa Cutych was a Field Watchman. (Shikner was married to Grandma Cutych's niece, Anna Kroman Shikner).
Stanley's stories: Grandpa would show shelter to gypsies, but they did not trust anyone. They would not remain overnite; and were gone in the morning when grandad went to check on them.
----
Vera inquired of the Caretaker in Kostomlaty about graves of the 2 infants at the Cemetery by Church of Pater & Paul. He said babies were buried by the fence and let grow up to grass.
----
His death certificate states that his mother's maiden name was RAICHL.
----
His birthplace is about 12 miles east of Prague, on the Labem river, a few miles east of Lysa or Lise.

Notes:
The Withers family geneology from the Virginia Historical Magazine gave his death date as: Wi
ll dated Nov 21 1803, proved jan 23 1804
The Hord geneology from Colonial families in the US, Vol. 1, gave his death date as 1805, and call him "William Withers of Stafford County".
From the Prince William Co., Virginia, Order Book 1759-61, on 25 June 1760: "William Withers having attended four days as a witness for George Weatly against Honor Willimas, ordered George pay him for the same and for twice travelling from Fauquier County to this Court forty miles." [The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 20, p. 280]
Fauquier Co., Land records below are from [Grantee Index to Deeds, Fauquier Co., Va., 1759-1914, LDS Film# 31582].

Another William Withers [RIN=868] appears in land sales on 24 Apr 1809 [17-343], 26 Feb 1810 [17-537], and 31 May 1814 [26-222], involving John Ashby and wife in all cases. Since these are clearly after this William's death, we know there is another person by the same name, and there is a chance any of the above may be the other William.
I don't know if this is him, but in "A list of Quit Rents for County Berkeley, Virginia. 1780" in National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. XX, No. 2, June 1932, pg. 50, appears "Withers, Wm, 907 acres, 3 Arrears, and (ditto) 108 acres, 1 Arrears." (probably not)
Withers VI:648 says he is the common ancestor of all Mason County, W.V. and Mead County, KY branches of the Withers Family.

In 1804, his father willed him a portion of a tract of land in Culpepper where Spencer's brother James was residing, and a portion (presumably half) of an adjacent tract of 109 acres. He also received "several negroes, horses, cattle, hoggs [sic] etc." that were on that land. In addition, his father instructed that 20 or so of his slaves be sold, as well as stocks of horses, cattle, hoggs, & sheep, and household and kitchen furniture and other property at a public auction, and that the proceeds to be divided equally among his children; however, the shares of Spencer and Susanna were to be detailed by the executors until a later date "so as not to be squandered".
From Rev. Pension Records: Spencer Withers, VA Line, S6400, sol was b in 1765 in Fauquier Co., VA & he lived there when he enl. at Warrenton VA and was living there when he appl. 30 Aug 1832. In 1833 he stated he had also lived in Mason Co., KY and in the state of TN but had returned to Fauquier Co., VA in 1813. Died 24 Apr 1834.
There is also a land grant record from John Chrisman to his father-in-law Spencer Withers of land in Mason Co., [West] Virginia.
Note: George Erwin Howell had recorded that he died in Culpeper Co., Va.
These notes are from G.E. Howell:
Spencer Withers was only 15 years old when he enlisted at Warrenton, Va, in the summer of 1780 as a substitute for Peter Crim in the Company of Captain Francis Triplett. He marched to Hillsbourough, N.C., where he entered the brigade of Colonel Morgan. He fought in the battle of Cowpens as his brother Lewis had and after that was detached to Fauquier under Lieutenant Dearin, arriving home in March of 1781 and then discharged.
He was christianed by Rev. Craig. Following his discharge, he went to live on 210 acres of land that his father owned in Culpepper Co., Va. He married Esther Potts and they became some of the early settlers of Cledinin District, Mason Co., West Virginia. Esther died in Mason County, 18 July 1818 and the house was consumed by fire the same year. Spencer returned to Culpepper Co, Va., to live in 1823. In 1831 he was granted an annual pension of $80.00 for his military service. He died in Culpepper Co., Va, on 24 Apr 1843.

Virkus VI:648 states that he moved to Mason County in 1810, but later returned to Culpeper County, leaving his wife behind in Mason County living with his son Jacob until death.
