    Notes:
This might be Charity Barber [RIN=20601], b. 6 Jun 1748, Harwinton, Litchfield Co., CT, dau . of Israel and Comfort (Merriman) Barber.
However, this has not been proven, and a 1748 birthdate is considerably earlier than one would expect (compare the birthdates of her children). I would expect a birthdate closer to 1765 for the first wife of Benjamin Briggs.

In a large pile of hand-written notes and to-do lists made by Lillian (Gosman) Briggs, c1964, I found a node that reads: "David Barber (Fa of Charity) b. 1755 at Windsor, Conn. Charity m. Benj. Briggs." This should not be taken as an actual record -- it is possible that she just noted this down as a possible lead. The nature of the other items on the page are things to look up, etc.

(The stuff in brackets is very hard to read and may be slightly wrong).
This may indicate that they might have had one or two earlier children before Charles S. Note: Viola (Haines)(Wilson) Glover says there were only the three children by his first wife. Those may be cousins. [Phone call 11/4/1994]

!Marriage(2-Antonette): IGI, Film #M515699-5081: "Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Pape to Antonette Therese Vogel, 30 Aug 1874 in St. Louis". Also IGI Batch Number 8026904-28.

!Baptism-Birthplace: [Church records from Evangelisch, Hausberge, Westfalen, Preussen, LDS Batch J964883, film # 582781]: "Carl Heinrich Wilhelm Pape, bp. 9 Feb 1840, parents: Cord Heinrich Pape and Caroline Schmedts"
A full transcription of the original is difficult, because it is in German (which I do not know), with some characters I'm not familiar with, and with really hard to read handwriting. My translation: "No. 8, Christian name: Carl Heinrich Wilhelm, Day and hour of birth in [?Buchftaben?] and digits: [ can't read ], Whether child was born out of wedlock: No, First and surname of the father also shared by the child: Cord Heinrich Pape [unreadable word], First and surname of the mother: Caroline Schmedts, Residence of the child: Lohfeld, Date of the baptism: 9 Febr, Name of the priest who did the baptism: Fred, Names of the baptismal witnesses: Heinr. Pape, Wilhelm [Bohne], [Calou] H. Pape."

Note: One of his baptismal witnesses was Wilhlem Bohne. A Fridrich Wilhelm Bohne married Maria Christine Pape in 1828 at that same church [Batch M964883, film 0582781, Kirchenbuch 1651-1909, Evangelische Kirche Hausberge]. I think it is reasonable to assume this to be the same person, and therefore Maria Christine (Pape) Bohne is quite likely an aunt.

As for the witness Heinr. Pape, there are quite a few Heinrich Pape's in those records, and it is hard to untangle them all. Perhaps this is a grandfather (?). Could the final witness just be the father? Or is that a given? If not, there are also quite a few Carl Heinrich Papes baptised on those records (1804, 1819, 1821, 1825, 1833), so it could be one of those also.

Death certificate indicates that he immigrated approximately 1857 (i.e., had been in US for 65 years at time of death). Also, the 1900 census says he immigrated in 1857.
Exact immigration record has not yet been proven. However, he may have been on of the following:
Charles Pape, arrived 22 Jan 1866 from Bremen to New York on the ship
Atalanta, age 26. Reported he was from "Lippe Detmold" and destined
for New York and was a cigar maker. [Source: Germans to America, Vol. 17,
    page 143.
    Other immigrant records include:
    1. Heinrich Pape, age 27, arr.20 Jul 1863, farmer from Linden. [GTA15:43]
    2. Heinr Pape, age 20, arr.21 Nov 1863, laborer [GTA15:141]
    3. Heinrich Pape, age 19, arr.10 May 1854 [GTA 7:21]
    4. Heinrich Pape, age 8, arr.30 May 1854 [GTA 7:224]

Viola (Haines) Glover says (phone call 11/4/1994) that she met grandpa Pape when she was about 5 years old at the old homestead near Springfield, Ill.
She remembers taking a horse and carriage ride out to the farm, and then seeing him bending down over the stove. He had white hair and was quite tall. Grandma Pape (Antonette) was there also. This would have been about 1910. She says he immigrated when he was about 18 years old. Some other Pape family members also came across, either before or after, and settled in the same Illinois area, but isn't sure of the relationships.

She thinks he went by the name "Charles", but wasn't certain. Eva Morrow thought the same.

In phone call with Eva Morrow (11/19/1994), she believes two of his brothers also came over and settled in Illinois or Missouri, and that Charles was the youngest. She doesn't know their names, but remembers hearing that one brother lost contact with the family following a large fire in St. Louis, Mo.

In an email from Paul Gilmer on Dec 30, 1997, Paul says his ancestor was Frederick Pape, b. 24 Aug 1820 in Hanover, Germany, or probably more accurately, Steinbruck, Germany, son of John William Pape and Johanna Dorotea Reinate. John Henry Frederick Pape emigrated from Germany in 1844, to America in 1847, as did his brother Henry Pape & sisters Johanna Meyer (Nov 14, 1826-June 20, 1870) and Emily Cramm (Jan 7, 1832-Feb 16, 1914). In [Quincy and Adams County, Illinois, Vol 1, D.F. Wilcox, 1919, p.979-80] is says that his brother Henry went to Oregon & died there. Frederick lived in Melrose Twp, Adams Co., ILL and died there Oct 3, 1895. Paul was wondering whether the brother Henry Pape might be our Charles Henry William Pape. Currently, this remains one possible lead.

1870 Census: I have not been able to find him definately in the 1870 census, unfortunately. However, I did find a household where the two adults have names and ages that match exactly the names and ages of him and his wife on the date the census was enumerated. However, the children don't match, so it can't be the same. I will note it here anyway. (Note that there is another an odd coincidence as well. CHWP's father and step mother, Charles & Wilhelmina, should be found in the 1860 census, but the only Charles & Wilhelmina I find is in Monitowoc, WI, which is not far from Manitowoc and also on the short of Lake Michigan).
