Notes:
Was President of the Sterling Surgical Manufacturing Co. of Brooklyn and Northport, N.Y. whe
n he passed away. He lost most of his hair in the late years of his life --- there was no baldness, just a noticeable thinness. In his early years there was a thickness of hair generally tousled which Lillian Briggs thought somewhat becoming to him and he was more or less indifferent to what the public thought of his appearance, but always he was immaculately clean. He was a well built man about 5'11" in height and weighed approximately 165 or so. He was somewhat strangely reticent --- uncommunicative to the point of making one uncomfortable sometimes when with him. His deep set eyes, dark brown were seemingly penetrative but his secretly charitable heart was a real redeeming asset. At the age of about 10 yeras he was bound out (as was the trend of that time) to a family in Iowa where he remained until about the age of 22 years. His father had passed away previous to the time he had left New York City and when he returned home to his mother his brothers were married and his mother living alone in Brooklyn, NY. It was not long before he succumed to the charm of his mother's young visitor Sarah Jane Bolstridge, and in less than three years he married her. He always anticipated returning west but he never did keep the promise he had made to himself to make Iowa his permanent home on this earth. Shortly after marriage he attended The Student's Art League in N.Y.C. His leaning toward art was strong but his training was of short duration tho he painted animals and landscapes in fine detail. However, painting was never more than a hobby for him. To meet family objligations the surgical work in which he made his bread and butter took most of his time and about 1904-5 he and his wife Sarah went into partnership with one Mr. John Douglass and founded the Sterling Surgical Manufacturing Company in Brooklyn. About 1910 with their son Clarence they moved to Northport, N.Y., on Long Island and here Clarence was started as a cutter for the firm which carried on the business in the Gosman home. Soon came World War 1 and a great demand for surgical supplies -- it required a dozen or more sewers and other workers also a small factory building and during the War years John Hasbrouck Gosman amassed a goodly sum of money. About 1918 he financed the birth of the Suffolk County Canning Company of Northport, N.Y. for his older son, John Hasbrouck Gosman Jr., in which he became president until his demise in 1920. Then because of insufficient funds the Company became solvent.

Notes:
Married to John Hasbrouck Gosman by Rev. J. G. Bass.
She was a sincere and exceptionally devout Christian of the Protestant faith and in the early 1900s a Deaconess in the Lenox Road Baptist Church of Brooklyn N.Y. Wholeheartedly she endeavored to aid anyone in trouble of distress and when possible collected for the needy. She was about 5' 1" in height, had hazel eyes, light skin (sort of pinkish) and when young her hair was brown but it was what is known as pepper and salt before she was 35 yeras of age. In her late years the strands silvered and became a crowning glory of pure silky white. Her cheeks were naturally ruddy and her countenance protrayed a sort of goliness.
After her husband's death, she lived with her son Clarence until her death.

Notes:
Lillian May Briggs (Gosman) knew him for a few years after her marriage.
He was then rather stocky in build and gray haired and had a slow easy gait and quiet manner --- sort of peaceful-like. When I knew him he was night engineer at the Brooklyn, N.Y. Gas Light Company in the Eastern District of Brooklyn and was justly proud of having worked up from office boy with that Company. Sarah Jane, Lillian's mother-in-law, who was Caleb's daughter, often spoke of how hard her dad had worked to attain his position which had never interferred with him being a good father and husband. His devotion to his family was well appreciated. Sarah Jane was about nine years of age and the oldest of the four children left him to care for when his #1 wife Elizabeth Cordingly passed away with tuberculosis and Caleb kept the little family together for five years before marrying the second time. The chore of keeping house was then somewhat easier for Sarah Jane and from all accounts Caleb was well pleased with his choice for a whife and mother. During the last years of his life, while he lived at the old homestead of his parents --- a small cottage in Central Islip, New York --- he suffered with asthma, although it was a reaction to a stroke that partly paralized him, and which took him out of this world in 1917.
Caleb was a Civil War Veteran. He was in U.S. service under General McClellan but was given honorable discharge because of Epilepsy. However, this disease never hindered him in any advancement. He lived a perfectly normal life and in his late years he seemed to have outgrown it. His U.S. Pension record is at the National Archives in Washington D.C., in which city he was discharged from military service.

0, 1665 Louis DuBois son of late Chretien Dubois of Weirs near LaBarrie of the one part and Catherine Blanchan, daughter of Mathew Blanchan of the City of Manheim of the other part, were married in the French Church at Manheim.
Religious persecution in Artois induced Louis and Jacques DuBois to abandon their country. Louis went to Manheim in the Palantinate. At Manheim, Louis was thrown into intimate relations with Mathese Blanchan and Christien Deyou, also Huguenot refugees, the former from vicinity of his father's estate in Artois and the latter from the neighborhood of Calais. In Oct 10, 1655 Louis married Catherine, the daughter of Mathese Blanchan and his wife Madeline Jorisse. The following record is in the Old Protestant Evangelical Church at Manheim in French: "Oct 10, 1665, Louis DuBois, son of late Chretien DuBois of Wiers near La Bassee of the one part and Catherine Blanchan daughter of Mathew Blanchan of the City of Manheim on the other part, were married in the French Church at Manheim."
They had two sons born in Manheim --- Abraham and Isaac. All their other children were born in America.

Notes:
The DuBois family is one of the oldest of the noble houses of Cotentin in Duchy of Normandy
. The heraldic records of Paris commence the geneology with Geoffroi DuBois, a knight banneret and a companion of Duke Williams in the conquest of England 1066.
The mottoe of the DuBois coat-of-arms is "Tiens to Foy" meaning "Keep They Faith".
Chretien DuBois (this entry) was a descendant of the knight Geoffroi. He was a Huguenot gentleman of the family of DuBois Seicneuno(?) of Beaufermez and de Bourse, having an estate at Wieres, in La Bassee near Lille in French Flanders now Artois.
It was undoubtedly owing to Chretien being identified with the Huguenot faith that an attempt to obliterate the public records of the family and destroy all evidence of his connection with nobility of France.

His parentage was supplied to me by Kim Everingham. It seems to be highly credible. Previous theories have been proposed, but disproven.
