Notes:
He was Vice President of the Suffolk County Canning Company of Northport, Long Island, N.Y.
, which at birth was financed by his father, though its real origin was a venture of self support through canning in the home and selling in small quantities by John H. Gosman Jr. and his wife Lillian (writer of the Hasbrouck family history). The company was solvent when his father passed away and was the following year re-incorporated as The Long Island Food Products Company of which John became president. This company was short lived and went into bankruptcy. John then migrated with his wife and two daughters to New Haven, Connecticut, and entered the art field. He had previously painted and done sculpturing as a hobby but in New Haven he followed it professionally and there became known as an artist. John was a great lover of water sports --- as a swimmer he had unusual endurance and many times after his day's work his wife would watch him swim out to Sperry Light, a lighthouse in Long Island Sound off the short from West Haven where they lived. He was an easy person to live with, had a very generous nature and was always sympathetic with those who had little of this world's fine things. By extending credit he lost much money during 1929-32 and in 1938 he migrated with his wife and daughter Beverly to Washington D.C. On arrival he had less than $50.00 in cash but he was never one to be disheartened and a job at plain house-painting sustained the small family for a short time. In 1940 Lillian, his wife, started with the U.S. Government Civil Service as secretary to General Porter of Chemical Warfare and remained with him until 1944. John was by then well planted in his beloved field of work --- art. However, it was not until 1950 that he did his first work in the U.S. Capital Building and Lillian, his wife, who had taken a short course at Yale Art School when her husband was studying there also at night was competent to be his co-worker. As a team they became well known at the U.S. Capitol and various government buildings where they were frequently called for painting, restoration and gilding embracing all phases of art. Early in 1957 they were given a commitment of forty-three restorations at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, VA, and a second commitment of forty-nine restorations. However, John passed away at the College before the first commitment was even a quarter finished. With the very kind help (never to be forgotten) of her daughter, Constance, the commitment was completed by Lillian in due time. John was about 5'7 1/2" in height, had a mass of brown curly hair when a boy which whitened before he was fifty years of age. He was rather robust in stature and had brown eyes with a soft expression and when he smiled they twinkled. His hearty laugh was most infectious. In 1957 a stroke, most unexpected, took him out of this world.
The following obituary is taken from a newspaper article (source unknown):
J.H. Gosman, [...] Numerous Capitol Paintings ---------------------------------------------
John Hasbrouck Gosman, who restored numerous paintings at the Capitol, died yesterday in Williamsburg, Va., where he was doing restoration work on paintings for William and Mary College.
Mr. Gosman worked on the cleaning and restoration of the Discovery of the Mississippi and the Signing of the Declaration of Independence which hang in the Capitol rotunda, as well as numerous portraits in both the House and Senate wings, during the restoration work on the building in 1950.
He also did the restoration of the portraits of George Washington and Gen. Lafayette which flank the Speaker's rostrum in the House of Representatives.
Mr. Gosman, who had lived in Washington 19 years, [....] work. He had recently refinished several frames for the Corcoran Art Gallery.
At the time of his death, Mr. Gosman had been working on the development of a gilding kit for do-it-yourself hobbyists to finish picture frames.
A native of New York City, he was the son of John Hasbrouck and Sarah Jane Bolstridge Gosman, and a direct descendant of Gen. Abraham Hasbrouck, who fought in the American Revolution.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lillian Briggs Gosman, of 8023 Eastern Avenue, Silver Spring, two daughters, Mrs. Harold Bernard, of Johnstown, Pa., and Mrs. Harry A. Latimer, of 1023 Stirling road, Silver Spring; a brother Clarence, of Long Island, N.Y., and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 tomorrow in Parklawn Cemetery.

Notes:
Lillian May Briggs was a geneologist by profession. She compiled the family history for th
e ancestors and relatives of John Hasbrouck Gosman, from which nearly all of the information in this database pertaining to the ancestry of John Hasbrouck Gosman comes from.
She also helped her husband with restoration work in Washington D.C. and William and Mary College (see the notes under John Hasbrouck Gosman Jr. for more details).
"Art and Geneology", she said, "are not my two loves and I don't know which I love better." She was a rather small person physically, about 5'3" in height and somewhat on the slender side weighing never more than 120 pounds. She had blue eyes and, in 1960, her hair which had long been cut short was pure white though 'twas chestnut brown and had a natural curl when young.
The following story is copied from a May 1, 1973 newspaper clipping:
Mrs. Lillian Gosman is one of the sixteen senior citizens engaged in the Home Visitation Program provided by Supportive Services Branch. She has been involved with this program since October 11, 1971, a period of one and a half years.
An attractive and vivacious person, Mrs. Gosman attributes her alertness (mental and physical) to involvement. She has a keen interest in genealogy, Delighting in tracing family histories. Mrs. Gosman also is an accomplished artist, having been employed in the field of art restoration in the nation's Capitol Building.
In her present capacity, as a home visitor, Mrs. Gosman visits eight persons on a regular basis. Many of these persons are confined to home due to chronic illnesses, and Mrs. Gosman's happy countenance on her visits brightens their days.
[Photos are included showing Lillian with Mrs. Clara Herring, one of the women Lillian befriended through this program.] According to Mrs. Gosman, "Visiting the elderly who are at times lonely, confined, and perhaps momentarily confused is most rewarding. I assume that a cherry manner, a sincere smile, and a bit of time expended socially can be mutually gratifying. For me an unexpected strange door of wholesome accomplishment and fulfillment has opened and created a new avenue to further happiness."
Information about her death comes from the U.S. Social Security Index, where it is reported that her SS# was 049-01-4521, her birthdate is given (equal to that found in other family records), and her death is reported as Nov 1976 in Ft. Lauderdale, Broward, Florida, zip=33304.

Captain of Chas Co. Militia, will Annapolis Md.
Member of Assembly 1682.
Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Act. Council Proceedings Vol 5, pg. 539
!Will: Filed in the land office at Annapolis, Md. Mentioned in ["Country Life in George in teh days of My Youth" by Rebecca Latimer Felton, 1835-1930, on-line at http://metalab.unc.edu/docsouth/felton/felton.html] p.19. He gives his son Randolph Brandt the 2nd "two hundred acres lying on the Potomac river near land of Randolph Hanson's, wherein Brandt is now dwelling, called Hammersmith." Randolph Brandt 2nd witnessed the will of Randolph Hanson in 1698, along with Richard Harrison, progenitor of two President Harrisons. The Hansons were leaders in the initial settlement of Calvert's territory in Charles Co., Maryland. Additionally, in his will he left four hundred pounds English money to the minister who would officiate at his funeral exercises.
He divided lands and slaves between his heirs, also spoons and silver and gold cups, and made provision for the education of his minor children.
Felton says, "Capt. Randolph Brandt might have been born in Barbadoes, where his father and mother and oldest brother lived and died, for their wills are recorded there in proper form and order, but family tradition tells of English birth and lineage for the ancestors. Capt. Randolph Brandt came into Maryland before 1660, upon the invitation of Lord Baltimore. They were close friends and patriotic workers during life, and 'Maryland archives' preserved in the Library of Congress, is full of the story of Capt. Brandt's unusual patriotism. He and Lord Baltimore were zealous Catholics through life. Capt. Brandt had a wife and children when he settled at "Penguiah Manor", about the year 1670, in Charles County, and the name of the plantation is still connected with the soil, and the land lies quite near the county site of LaPlata.
Capt. Randolph Brandt was captain of Maryland militia in 1678, member of the General Colonial Assembly in 1682, Commissioner of Indian Affairs when Wm. Penn was also Commissioner of Indian Affairs in the State of Pennsylvania.
Capt. Brandt was expressly engaged to protect the towns of Charles county from hostile Indian invasion. He also protected friendly Indian tribes from the hostiles, who continually threatened to exterminate all Indians friendly to the white settlers. In that time of stress and strain, he raised a large military company at his own expense. In remembrance thereof the Colonial assembly of Maryland voted to Capt. Brandt several thousand pounds of tobacco as a part refund for money expended in behalf of the Commonwealth. Maryland Archives, p. 357, vol. 17, says: "Capt. Randolph Brandt, precept to protect the towns of Charles county. His course of diplomacy and devotion to duty characterized Capt. Brandt's career in Maryland, and mark him as one of her noblest founders of colonial families."

Notes:
Family tree also has "Barbadoes" written under his name. I don't know what this indicates
. Also says "Sent by the King to make Settlement" above his nme across the top of the chart.
At this point, I do not know much about what either of these phrases means.
One might conjecture that the author of the pedigree was telling us that Marcus was sent by the king to establish a settlement on Barbados. Or possibly he came from Barbados and was sent to establish a settlement in the colonies (which would have been Maryland if that was the case).
Marcus probably did not settle in America, because the only early immigration records I've found was that of his son Randolph BRANDT to Maryland.
Source: Large pedigree chart given to me by Henry Allan Latimer. Origin
of this chart is unknown, but I suspect it was prepared by a genealogist
hired by the LATIMER family at one point, possibly about 1906 or soon
after (because the most recent date on the chart is 1906).
See also the will for his grandson Marcus Brandt, listed in the notes section for him. It explicitly lists some connections to St. Michaells on the Island of Barbadoes.
