Notes:
!Obituary (from the Oregon Statesman, 1-7-1894, Sec. III, p. 24): RAINES:- At 7 o'clock, a.m.
, Saturday, January 6, 1894, at the farm residence of Lewis Pettyjohn, southwest of Salem, Mrs. Millie Raines, aged 97 years. Among the list of the earliest pioneers of Oregon, the deceased was numbered and she was one of the oldest women residents of this state. Her son-in-law, Lewis Pettyjohn, is nearly 80 years of age.
She was the grandmother of Mrs. M.J. Crump of this city and the great-grandmother of Mrs. A.D. Davidson and Miss Lena Crump.
The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the home and interment in the Rural cemetery.
Note:Although her obit says she was born in 1797, other records during her lifetime would support a birthdate of about 1804.
Amelia and Lewis Neal were divorced, separating about 1820, on account of Amelia having an affair with John Raines (who she later married). There was a substantial age difference between Lewis and Amelia, which may have contributed to their problems. Joseph Cox was appointed protector of the children.
After marrying John Raines, they went to Illinois for a while and later returned to Indiana.
Sherrain Glenn reports her birthdate to be 4 June 1817 (I don't know the source).
Ancestors of Lillie May Cox, on www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/h/i/Dianna-L-Whitmer/GENE3-0005.html gives her birthdate as 14 Oct 1799 in Misc PA, with no source.
The following sketch was written by Flora S. Neal (wife of Daniel Kimberlin Neal) [Feb 1894]:
SKETCH OF A REMARKABLE PIONEER WOMAN -- Numbers hundreds of descendants
Mrs. Mille Rains who passed away on the 6th of this month (Feb) was born in Kentucky, May 14, 1797. She was first married in that state to Lewis Neal in about the year 1815. At the death of her husband [sic -- known to be an error] in about the year 1820 she moved to Illinois with her three children (Mary Edwards, Daniel, and William Neal) and was married to John Rains in 1825 and remained in that state until the following year when they moved to Indiana, where she remained until 1838 when they moved to Missouri. They came across the plains to California in '57 [sic -- should be 1850] and to Oregon the following year. They subject of this sketch was the only daughter of Joseph and Mary Cox and also the last surviving member of a family of eleven children. Her brothers were Thomas Cox, died in Salem about 25 years ago and at one time was a stock holder in the old woolen mills in North Salem. Gideon Cox -- died some five or six years ago on his donation land claim near Silverton. Peter Cox - died also on his land claim near the same place, and of Wm, Jacob, John, Joseph, James, Jesse and Elias, this writer has no history of and does not believe that any of them came to this state (probably Colorado or possibly Kansas).
"Aunt Millie" as she was familarly called by all, was the mother of nine children, including the three above named. They are Mrs. Lewis Pettijohn, Thomas Rains, John Rains, Joseph Rains (now deceased), Gideon Rains, and Jane Weaver of Crook County. The oldest of her children would, if living, be a little over 80 years. There are 46 living grandchildren, 102 great grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
In comparing her remarkable long life with history, we find her to have been 2 1/2 years of age when Washington died. She was 7 years when Lewis and Clark made their eventful journey across the continent. She was 10 years old when Robert Fulton plowed the waters of the Hudson River with the first steamboat. Perry fought his memorable battle on the lakes when she was 16, and in the year when Jackson fought the great battle with the British at New Orleans she was married. She was a woman of 33 when the Great Debate occurred between Daniel Webster and Robert Hayne.
The journal takes pleasure in adding this tribute to the memory of a noble pioneer lady, whose goodness of heart and sterling character are attested to by a worthy line of descendants. May she ever rest in peace, and may they all respect her memory.

The following appears in a letter from Henry L. Neal to Nellie ??? (Nellie being the aunt of Glenda , and a descendant of Daniel Neal). The letter is signed Henry L. Neal, with notation that he was the postmaster at Wanetta & ex-war vet. Sent to me by Glenda, Feb 1999:
"I [Henry L. Neal] have secured a picture of Millie Cox and enclose it in this letter as a present to you. [LDC -- I do not have a copy]. Ilearned that Millie Cox Raines as she later became, was one of the best women that ever lived and that she was a midwife and became noted as never losing a single case out of the thousand cases she aided...."

Had a 4th grade education. Worked for a lumbermill as a tallier, adding up how much lumber h
ad been loaded onto trains. During his adult life, he worked around Oregon as jobs arose, with the family living a rather nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place often. For a time at the Silver Falls Lumber Company in Silverton, he worked along side Clark Gabel before the latter had made it big in the movies.
Even when Clark Gabel was working in the lumbermills, he always said he was doing it to get enough money to launch his movie career, which he successfully did.
Frank served in the Army during World War I. He landed in Liverpool in 1917, went across the Channel to Brest, France, and worked behind the lines building hospitals, caring for the wounded, etc. He saw no combat. His commanding officer was Lt. Gibling.
