    Notes:
In records in Monroe Co., IL, he generally appears as "Henry" or Heinrich".

He and wife Caroline (Schmedts) are identified as the parents of Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Pape (Charles Henry William Pape) by both the History of Sangamon Co., IL, and the baptismal record for KHWP in Hausberge, Germany. Holy Cross records show his first wife died in Feb 1856, and marriage records show him remarrying Wilhelmina in Apr 1856. Herman's household in 1880 shows he then fathered Herman, Anstine, and Caroline. A few daughters's birth records from first wife are also found Holy cross Lutheran records in Monroe Co. This comes from the combination of the marriage record of Henry Pape to Wilhelmina Menkhoff 25 Apr 1856, and the census record for Herman Pape, where his mother Wilhelmina is living with him, showing an age consistent with his, declaration that Herman's father came from Germany, and most telling, that Herman's nephew Charles, age 13, is enumerated in his household. Charles's parents are born Germany / Illinois, which makes all of Charles's information perfectly consistent with this being the son of KHWP and Elizabeth White. Being Herman's nephew, that indicates Herman was KHWP's brother. There is a strange issue as to why Charles, 13, would be enumerated twice -- once with his parents, and once with his uncle. But those things do occassionally happen. He is apparently there doing work as a farm laborer, presumably for his uncle, so he may have been residing there at the time, and his parents may have just listed him anyway.

A biography for W.C. Berneking in the Biographical History of Cloud Co., Kansas, identifies the parents, and states that Henry Pape had five children by the first marriage, and eight by the second, four of whom (from the second) were still living in 1903 (Caroline Margaret, Mrs. Sparwasser, Erstina Gerber, and Herman).

A few records are found at the Evangelisch church in Hausberge, Westfalen, that might be him: [Batch J964883]
    * Carol Henrich Pape, bp. 28 Oct 1804, par. Fridrich Pape & Christine Nihus
    * Cord Henrich Friedrich Pape b. 21 Feb 1819 m. 8 Mar 1840 to Wilhelmine Sophie Caroline Pape, she b. 6 Jul 1817 and dau. of Johann Heinr. Pape.
    * Cord Henrich Fridrich Pape, bp. 24 Feb 1819, par. Carl Fridrich Pape & Sophie Christine Kuehme
    * Cord Henrich Pape, bp. 17 Mar 1821, par. Johann Henrich Pape and Sohia Kume
    * Carl Henrich Pape, bp. 12 Jun 1825, par. Johann Cord Pape and Anne Clostermann
[Note that "Cord" and "Carl" may be nothing more than a transcription descrepancy, given how difficult it is to read the handwritten script in those records].

In addition to the baptism record of Carl Heinrich Wilhelm Pape in Hausberge, Westfalen (9 Feb 1840), showing Cord Heinrich Pape m. Caroline Schmedts, there is also a record of marriage in Kadenberge, Hannover, Preussen between Cord Hinrich Pape and Mette Margaretha Glintenkamp on 24 Sep 1854 [LDC film 458271], and a birth to this couple at Kadenberge of Johann August Pape, b. 8 Nov 1856 [LDS Call #458271]. It is now known that this is not the same Cord Heinrich Pape.

There is also a marriage record in St. Clair Co., Missouri for a G.C.H.Gideon Pape and Elizabeth M. Vogel on 2 Oct 1873 [LDC Bat M515161, film 945453]. This is a possible son (note the possible connection to Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Pape's marriage to Antonette Therese Vogel in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1874).

The history of Sangamon Co., IL, Vol II, 1912, p. 1510, says that he immigrated to Monroe Co., ILL in 1848, where he lived for many years and eventually died. However, a search of the 1850 census of Monroe Co., IL, did not turn up a matching entry. A Henry Pape, 40, Germany, was found in south Chicago, along with a wife Caroline Pape, 40, Frederick 15, Caroline 9, [son, unreadable] Pape 5, and Henry Pape 1, all born Germany. The match on Caroline is highly suggestive, but the bio says that his son Charles Henry did not come with them to the US in 1848 (he came later in 1858), and would have been 10 years old in 1850, so that would seem to rule out this family.

    !Census 1870: Monroe Co., Illinois, twp 3 S.R. 10W, P.O. Maeystown, enum 9 July 1870, roll 261 p. 525a, household 190/199:

    Research Leads:
I haven't yet found him on the 1860 census. However, there is some name similarity (but with major descrepancies) with the following family:
Census 1860: Manitowoc town, Manitowa Co., Wisconsin, enum 11 Jun 1860, p. 65, household 524/519:
Charles Pape, 39, Laborer, b. Prussia
    Wilhelmina, 30, b. Prussia
    Amelia, 7, Prussia
    Wilhelmina, 5, Prussia
    Anna, 1, b. Wisconsin
[Note: I think this may be the Carl Heinrich Friedrich Pape (b. 21 Feb 1819) who m. 8 Mar 1840 in Evangelisch, Hausberge, Westfalen, Prussia to Wilhelmine Sophie Caroline Pape (b. 6 July 1817, dau. Johann Heinr. Pape & Marie Kulemann). If so, this is probably a close relative, since they originate from the same church in Hausberge, but I think this is probably a different family. A Friedrich Wilhelm Pape b. 26 Sep 1843, bp. 10 Oct 1843 Evangelische, Eisburgen, Westfalen, is probably their son (J971713).]

Maria Christine Pape who married Fridrich Wilhelm Boene/Bohne in 1818 at Evalngelisch, Hausberge, Westfalen, Prussia, is likely a sister. Her husband, Wilhelm Bohne, appears as a baptismal witness on the baptism record of Carl Heinrich Wilhelm Pape 9 Feb 1840. This may provide a small clue to parentage.

There is a close match submitted by a member of the LDS church, batch 7734119 for a Sophia Christiana Schmidt b. 25 Jun 1817, bp. 6 Jul 1817 at Schweinfurt, Unterfranken, Bayern. Parents: Paul Christian Schmidt and Christiane Barbara Merck. The birth date is off by only 5 days, and the name is pretty close, but otherwise I would have to assume it is a different individual.

    Notes:
Cordwainer (shoe maker) and ferry operator.

He was born prior to 1646 in either Canterbury or London, England.

It is believed that Peter emigrated from England to Virginia in 1669, although his name is not found on any published passenger lists.

About 1675 he migrated northward from an unnamed Virginia town to Bay Colony (Haverhill, Mass) leaving a wife and child in Virginia.

He was residing at Salem when he was impressed into the Bay Colony militia, participating in a bloody battle against the Eastern Indians at Blackpoint (Scarborough), Maine 29 Jun 1677. The wounded Pattee was mistakenly reported as dead in a report of casualties.

Two years later he was again "pressed for the country's service" but no details are known.

He was one of the earliest cordwainers in a town that later billed itself as the "Queen Shoe City of the World".

He also operated a ferry across the Merrimack. The far was a penny for a man or woman and five pence for a horse.
