Gothberg also claims that Myra Gatewood is a daughter. However, the bio of Fletcher Haines ( son of Myra (Gatewood) Haines) claims her father was Roland Gatewood. This conflict remains to be resolved.

John Gatewood appears on the tax list of Barren Co., Ky., 1811-14., Allen Co. 1815-35 (Allen Co. formed from Barren & Warren Co.).

Declaration for a pension of John Gatewood of Allen Co., 18 May 1833: "by reason of old age & the consequent loss of memory, cannot swear positively as to the precise length of his service...
Served 2 months as pvt under Capt. John Christian of Va. militia.
2 months 20 days as pvt under Capt. James Montgomery of Va. militia
2 months 24 days as pvt under Capt. William Tucker of Va. militia
2 months 25 days as pvt under Capt. James Pamphlet of Va. militia

On 16 Aug 1839, widow Nancy, also known as Ann, stated she believed John, during his first tour, primarily guarded Hession prisoners possibly posted about Portsmouth & Hampton. During the last tour, a volunteer, which he participated in the seige of York & capture of Cornwallis & assisted in escorting some prisoners to Winchester. She believed he was a substitute during one of his tours. [Nancy Gatewood's application for late husband John Gatewood's pension, 16 Aug 1839]

During the pension application, she also exhibited a Bible of great age with a family register giving births of John, Nancy, the marriage of John and Ann, and children. Sworn by Fletcher Gatewood, Peter Fishburn, and William Hatter.

On 16 Aug 1839, she applied for her late husband John's pension. She stated at that time tha t she was "74 years on the 5th day of Feb past" and married to John Gatewood 22 Aug 1782. Since John d. on 6 Oct 1835, she has remained a widow. She at that time exhibited a Bible, of great age with a family register, giving births of John, Nancy, the mar. of John and Ann [sic], and births of their children. Sworn to by Fletcher Gatewood, Peter Fishburn & William Hatter. [Gothberg p.225]

An entry in IGI lists her father as "Charles S. White", repeating the birthdate 5 Feb 1765 Amherst, which matches that of the Gatewood genealogy. Film # 5017627-7.

If not, it is my desire that after all my debts & funeral accounts is paid all the rest of my est I lend to my wife enduring her widowhood all but as much as those children not married to have equal to those that is married & at her death or widowhood to be equally divided. If any of the children dies without heirs at their death, their parts to be equally divided with the rest of their bros & sisters." Wit: Peter Cashwell, John Ham & Joseph Higginbotham."

13 Jan 1663: John Gatewood and Richard Silvester are witnesses to a deed of gift from Thomas and Jane Button to Charles Goodrich, in Farnham Parish, Rappahannock Co., Va. [Implies he is of legal age on that date -- if it is him and not an older John Gatewood]

2 Jun 1666: Jno. Gatwood was transported by John Catlett [Crozier, "Cavaliers & Pioneers -- Abstracts of VA Land Patents & Grants 1623-1666", p. 558]

19 Jul 1666: Jno Gatwood was transported by Mr. Thomas Button/Butten [Crozier, p. 562]

9 Dec 1676: Purchases 100 acres from John Gregory in South Farnham Parish. [Bk. 1677-82, p. 127]

1681: John Gatewood served as juror

Apr-Aug 1685: John Gatewood again served as juror.

1685: In the settlement of George Boyce's estate, John Gatewood owed 316 pounds of tobacco to the estate.

1688: John Gatewood purchased land beyond the Peumansend, adjacent to Thomas Pitts. [T.E. Campbell, "Colonial Caroline: A History of Caroline Co., Virginia", p. 318] On p. 25 of same, records reveal Gatewoods to be living in Caroline Co. with land adjacent to other grants as early as 1687.

1704: John Gatewood paid tax on 400 acres(presumed in Essex Co., Va). Did not find deeds for the purchase(s) of this land, but it may include the 350 acres of land he says in his will was purchased from Edwin Thacker and Capt. Richard Hale.


!Will: Dated 14 Nov 1706, proved 10 Jan 1707 Essex Co., Va, p.328. To my eldest son John Gatewood 100 acres that I formerly bought of Edwin Thacker lying on JohnCheesk's line. To my eldest daughter Frances Shackelford one shilling. Unto my son Richard Gatewood the plantation I now live upon and all the land pertaining thereto. Unto my son Thomas Gatewood 150 acres, part of land that I formerly bought of Capt. Richard Haile, now deceased, being also part of 5000 acres which did formerly belong unto Collo. Thomas Goodrich, Mr. Henry Aubrey and Maj. George Morrice all, deceased. Unto my son Henry Gatewood 75 acres beginning at a corner tree standing against simon Copner's house who is now deceased and running toward Joseph Billender's land. Also one six year old stear and one cow and calf. Unto my daughter Amie Burnett 4000 pounds of " sweetscented" tobacco and one bay mare with a blase in her face branded on ye rear butt with this brand, 3. All the rest of my worldly estate to be equally divided between my three younger children and my beloved wife and Sarah Gatewood and William Gatewood and Frances Gatewood. Surname possibly Magrah/McGraw (dau. of James McGraw of Essex Co., Va). Have also seen Week s and Crawley. Supporters of the McGraw theory cite as evidence the will of Thomas McGraw dated 21 Nov 1722 (see below). The Weeks theory comes from Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 12, #2, Apr 1974, p. 50.

Feb 1708/9: Amy Gatewood purchased 250 acres in S. Farnham Parish, Essex Co., from Francis Meriweather bounded by Hoskins Creek, John Meador's, John Gatewood's, Thomas Wheeler's and Mary Grigory's plots [Deed book p. 188-189].

9 May 1710: Court record shows her remarried to Mr. Joseph Baker, a wealthy merchant. In his will, Joseph Baker left large bequeaths to the Gatewood children.

21 Nov 1722: Amy Baker was a witness to the will of Thomas Magrah, planter of Essex Co., Va., along with Amy's son-in-law David Scott. In that will, generous bequeaths were made to Amy's sons James Gatewood and John Gatewood, and to her grandson Philip Gatewood. Her mark on this will (a capital "M") matches the one she used on 10 Jan 1707 as the executrix of the estate of John Gatewood. [Gordon Jefferson Gatewood, "Gatewood"].
