Leads on parentage:
-------------------
As of 1997, he parentage is a topic of controversy with several theories floating around.
There is evidence that the following individuals existed in Lower Norfolk, any one of which might have been Robert Foster's father: 1) Richard Foster who sailed from London on Aug 10, 1635 on the ship Safety, arriving in Virginia in the fall, whose passage was paid for by Bartholomew Hoskins. Bartholomew married, in England, Dorcus Foster, widow with two small children, and on 2 March 1639/40, Richard Foster calls Bartholomew "father" (i.e., this Richard Foster is the step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins).
This Richard Foster appears to have been literate. He followed his step- father into North Carolina. He was in England from 1648 to 1654.
This Richard Foster has been, on occasion, identified as the son of Sir Robert Foster and Miss Isham. IF this were so, then Miss Isham would have to be the Dorcus that remarried to Bartholomew Hoskins, but I don't know if there is any substantiation for this.
2) Richard Foster, who married Dorcus Hoskins, daughter of Bartholomew and Dorcus Hoskins. This Richard is distinct from the one in #1. This Richard Foster prob. came to Va in the late 1630s or early 1640s, and was apparently a lawyer, signing his name as "ffoster" (which looks like a W, and has been sometimes transcribed as Worster). He also was literate. He received a land patent in 1651 for the transport of himself, his wife Dorcus, and daughter Dorcus Jr. He was also probably the one who was a member of the house of Burgess, and was called Lt. and then later Capt., and then Major Foster.
He followed his father-in-law and step-brother-in-law into North Carolina.
3) Richard Foster who lived on Bennetts Creek on 25 March 1653/4. This one signed his name with an "X", and was therefore not literate, thus distinguishing him from #1 and #2. Lower Norfolk records show a Richard Foster fathering a child before marriage, and then marrying Ann Jackson, which would be presumably be this Richard). There was also a Richard Foster who signed his mark with a "ff" (not an "X") at an inquest concerning the death of Jacob Bradshaw on April 11, 1647 [Deed book B, Lower Norfolk Co., Va., p.51]. This may be #3, or may be yet another illiterate Richard Foster.
4) James Foster of Kingston Parish, Gloucester (now Matthews) Co., Va. He was a neighbor of John Garnett. A genealogist by the name of Capt. Ed Dittmer, retired naval officer, has put forth the theory that this is the most likely candidate for the father of Robert Foster. In a web article, Bill Foster have also expressed the opinion that this James Foster is the most likely candidate.
In short, #1 and #4 are the most likely, but evidence is lacking to draw any conclusion at this time.

From Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files:
"GORE, Eleazar or Eleazer or Eleazor, S35978, SC Line, sol enl in Chester Co SC, appl 24 Jun 1818 Caldwell Co KY, in 1824 he was living in Trigg Co KY with a wife aged 70 & his children were all of age & had families of their own (none were named), sold 14 feb 1830, in 1820 Joshua Gore of Johnson Co IL had srv with Eleazer Gore & that they were neighbors when at home, no relationship was stated."
In Feb 1776, while living in Chester Dist., SC, he enlisted and served under Capt. Richard Winn and Colonel Thomson in the Rangers. He was at the battle of Sullivan's Island. Afterwards, he served in the militia.
Note: I have no direct proof that Eleazer was the father of John Gore, but it is the natural inference to make.
In 1784, he inherited from his father 250 acres of land with the plantation where his parenst lived, with the plantation and 50 acres to be his after his mother's decease.
In 1789, his mother bequeathed him "all teh money he owes me being about twenty seven pounds Sterling money". He was also named as co-executor of his mother's estate.
!Census 1790: Chester Dist, SC 2-4-3-0-0.
Note: Others there in 1790 include James 2-3-5-0-0, John 1-2-3-0-0, John 2-3-3-0-0, & Joshua 1-2-7-0-0.
I don't see him in Chester Co., SC in the 1800 census.
!Census 1810: Chester Dist., SC
23 Aug 1820: Eleazer Gore appears in the second term of the circuit court of Trigg Co., Ky, held at the house of Robert Baker on this date. Also present is Ashford D. Gore. [History of Trigg County, chapter 2, http://www.kyseeker.com/trigg/history/chap2.html]
Note: his parents' wills establish his parentage, and the 23 Aug 1820 record with his brother John Ashford Gore (also named in the wills) establishes that the Eleazer Gore in the wills is the as the person in Trigg County, Ky.

Research & leads:
* Several uncorroborated sources list his wife as Elizabeth Murray (1760-1834) and his parents as James Gore Jr. and Elizabeth Dowden. Birthyear estimates range from 1747 to 1757, and birthplaces found include Frederick Co., Maryland, Horry S.C., Brunswick SC, Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Mass (!), and others. All are unreliable & undocumented sources so far, such as pedigree resource files and LDS member submissions in IGI. One submission lists his parents as James Gore and Elizabeth Ashford.
* James Gore Jr., named above, allegedly was b. 1707. His parents, James Gore 1 b. 1670, and Mary Burke, may have come from Ireland aboard the 2nd Lord Baltimore.

Mother appears to be a widow named Elizabeth King in 1804. Identity of parents as Sparrow and Elizabeth (Brown) King is currently a conjecture, but highly consistent and likely.

She sites Salem City Records 1:109, also pp 16 & 105. on Alexis Frye's (King FGS).
It looks very plausible that she might be the one in the following census listing, 1850, Salem 3rd ward, Essex Co., Mass, roll 312, page 158, 478/751: The birth place does not agree, but the age is sure close.
Elizabeth King, 83, $11000, Mass
Lavina Holt, 56, F, Mass

Margaut Schwab, 15, F, Germany
Leads:
Mary Penttinen-King says she saw a Peter Brown in Barringon, one of the early settlers.
Lead: Mary Penttinen-King reports that her grandfather's tree states that Elizabeth (Brown) King remarried to a John Baden in 1807. No documentation yet found for this. I checked the Salem mass vital records, both marriages and deaths to the year 1849, and found no records for the surname Baden. So, if there is anything to this lead, they probably moved somewhere other than Salem, Mass.
